Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Applying RGB Color Based on Cell Values in Excel | MrExcel Netcast. Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we will be discussing how to apply RGB color based on cell values in Excel. This question was sent in by Mike, who works for a company that deals with colors for paint. He has three columns of values ranging from 1 to 1000 and wants to convert them to RGB colors for conditional formatting. While this may not be possible in the regular Excel interface, it can be easily achieved using VBA. Before we dive into the solution, let's first understand the RGB model. When you use the fill color option in Excel and go to the custom tab, all the colors you can create are based on the RGB model. This model works on a scale of 0 to 255 for red, green, and blue. For example, if you have a value of 255 for red, you will get a pure red color. By mixing these three values, you can create any color you want. So, if you randomly click on a color and want to recreate it, you would use 75 for red, 53 for green, and 72 for blue. Now, let's get to the solution for Mike's problem. We will be using VBA to scale down the three values in each row to be between 0 and 255. To do this, we have written a subroutine called "add color" which will select all the rows of data and then calculate the RGB values for each cell based on the values in the first, second, and third columns. We have also added a code to sort the data based on the RGB values, which can be seen in the immediate window. To try this out, we will select the entire range of data and run the macro. And just like that, the colors are assigned based on the values in each row. However, it is important to note that these values need to be static for the colors to change. If the values are changed, the macro needs to be run again. We can also sort the data based on the A, B, and C values to see how the colors change. While this solution may not be directly applicable to Mike's data, it is an interesting way to quickly apply any of the 16 million colors available in Excel based on cell values. We hope this helps and thank you for tuning in to this episode of the MrExcel netcast. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more Excel tips and tricks. See you next time!
