Adapted from Moliere's 300 year old play, "Le Malade Imaginaire" except set in 1930's Hollywood. Adaptation, music, and libretto by American composer, James Nathaniel Holland. In Act I, we see the Hollywood mogul, Argan Rose (tenor), in his bedroom, bemoaning his ill condition, which is imaginary, and checking on why his secretary (Rudina (soprano)) hasn't arrived ( 0:00 Scene and Aria )with a special prescription he wants. When she comes, he berates her, but in her usual fashion turns the table to her advantage. (3:11 Scene/Duet) After, he calls for his daughter Angelique (mezzo/alto), to give her some good news. (6:26 Scene) As he briefly leaves to prepare things, Angelique and Rudina talk of Angelique new love, Clifton (tenor), (7:36 Scene/Duet/Aria) and her hopes that they will be together. (12:33 Scene) Argan breaks the news that someone has asked for his daughter in marriage and Angelique is overjoyed, thinking it's Clifton. But no, Argan has plans for Angelique to marry his Doctor's son, Thomas, with hopes of receiving free medical visits. (14:41 Scene/Duet) Angelique runs out crying and Rudina confronts him on such a stupid plan. Argan's second wife, Betty June (coloratura) enters, hearing yelling from the pool. Again Rudina turns the tables that Angelique will marry who she wants and exits. (16:13 Scene) Betty June tries to calm Argan down and (18:25 Aria) to discuss her undying love for him. (20:19 Scene) Then, Betty June's lawyer, Mr. Harper (baritone), arrives and discusses that it is best Betty June receive Argan's money before there is a possibility that his daughter might contest his will. B.J. and (22:24 Trio) Harper present Argan a paper to sign over all his holdings, but Argan is not quite sure. (25:09 Epilogue) Out in the garden, Angelique, pleads help from Rudina, who will not let her bosses' or Betty June's plan succeed.
