A family photograph dated 1906 seemed perfectly ordinary until a digital restorer zoomed in on the youngest child's face. What he discovered in the pupils of four-year-old Lucien Beaumont defied all rational explanation: a reflection that corresponded to no light source in the photographic studio. A reflection that eerily resembled the barred windows of an asylum. The subsequent research revealed a truth buried for 117 years in the medical archives of Sainte-Anne Hospital. Lucien had been interned six months before this photograph was taken, subjected to brutal treatments for manifestations that the doctors did not understand: esoteric symbols drawn while sleepwalking, disturbing predictions, and a voice that was not his own. The photographer, Édouard Marest, who took this portrait, closed his studio a year later and committed suicide by throwing himself into the Seine. The Beaumont family suffered tragic fates, as if this image carried a curse. And Lucien died at the age of six, taking with him a secret that science refused to acknowledge.
