Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir: A Literary Life and a Poetic Experience… Was Borrowing a Weak Point? Critical Reading in Arabic / Hamid OQABI الشاعر اللبناني بشارة الخوري (الأخطل الصغير): هل كان الاقتباس نقطة ضعف؟ ـــ ريفيو : حميد عقبي The Lebanese poet Bishara Al-Khuri (Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir) holds an important place in modern Arabic poetry. He became famous for his delicate love poetry and lyrical style, known for its smooth language and musical beauty. His poems were close to the feelings of the public, and many of them later became famous songs. This gave his poetry a wide cultural presence beyond the literary world. However, a careful critical reading of his work reveals a less discussed aspect: his strong influence from French Romantic poetry, and perhaps the borrowing of some of its images and ideas. This influence appears clearly in themes such as nostalgia, sad love, and the feeling of passing time. These themes are also found in poets like Alphonse de Lamartine and Alfred de Musset. In Lamartine’s famous poem The Lake, the poet speaks to time and says: “O time, stop your flight,” wishing that the beautiful moment could remain before time erases it. A similar idea appears in several poems by Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir, where he tries to preserve the moment of love before it fades. Musset also wrote that the most beautiful poems are born from pain, a vision that appears in some of Al-Akhtal’s poems linking emotional wounds to poetry. This does not mean that Al-Akhtal always copied texts directly. But in some cases his poems come very close to the spirit of French Romantic poetry. Still, this observation does not reduce his poetic value or his influence in Arab culture. He did not need to borrow fame from others, because he had real talent and a clear ability to create beautiful poetry. Perhaps critics in his time did not raise this question directly, because the poet was already a major literary figure at the height of his fame. Yet studying this aspect remains important, because literary criticism should not exclude anyone.
