In these lectures, Borges speaks about subjects he loved and that shaped his intellectual world: Dante, the Kabbalah, The Thousand and One Nights, Buddhism, poetry, nightmares, and finally blindness. The book is not an academic study. It is a series of free reflections that show how Borges thinks and how he moves naturally between literature, philosophy, and personal memory. The seventh lecture, “Blindness,” is the most personal and moving. Borges begins by challenging the common idea that blindness means complete darkness. He explains that it is more like a world of mist, where some colors disappear and others remain, such as yellow, which stayed with him. He describes his loss of sight as a “slow sunset” that began in childhood, not as a sudden tragedy. The great irony of his life was that in 1955 he was appointed director of the National Library at the very moment he realized he had lost the sight of a reader and writer. He then wrote a poem about “books and blindness” as two opposite gifts. Borges does not see blindness as a total disaster. He believes it can become a “way of life.” Blindness opened for him the world of Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian literature and turned his solitude into deep reflection. He mentions Homer, Milton, and Joyce to show that blindness did not stop them from creating great works; instead, it strengthened the musical and auditory side of poetry. He ends with the idea that everything that happens to a person can become material for art. Borges (1899–1986) was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century.
