Notting Hill College Presents: Innovation in Education | 18th of February, 2023 Learning for the Future... Reflecting, Reviewing, Re-visioning Rachel Tsateri | An Eclectic Approach to Teaching 1:1 Grammar Lessons Teaching English one-to-one has always been a popular mode of instruction. Students who need extra support or more flexibility often opt for private classes. Arguably, the main benefit is that lessons are planned based on the learners’ individual needs. However, this can be challenging for newly qualified teachers. In my experience, teachers often end up doing most of the talking, especially when teaching grammar. Long grammar lectures can be counter-productive for learning, so I would argue that they need to be avoided. Thus, the questions that arise are the following: 1. What is the best method for teaching grammar one-to-one? 2. How can we plan grammar lessons to ensure maximum engagement and student talking time? In in this session, I am going to share how I have combined elements from different approaches to design my own method for teaching one to one grammar lessons. All the procedures and stage aims will be explained. The audience will also be invited to critically evaluate this method at the end of the session.
