Why We Should Teach Children Feminism | Ariana Gupta | TEDxMAIS

Ariana Gupta is a 17 year old writer. In her book, ‘New Age Fairy tales’ she redefines the characteristics of girls and women in traditional fairy tales. She portrays them to be more empowered, independent versions of themselves, and creates a local setting. Her talk focuses on the importance of well rounded representations of race and gender in the media, referencing the impact of bedtime stories in shaping young minds. It also focuses on the importance of teaching children feminism. Ariana is a 17-year old that recently realised the deeply patriarchal roots from which a majority of fairy tales and bedtime stories stemmed. This troubling epiphany, inspired the creation of her book 'New Age Fairytales'. The book, designed for children, recreates traditional fairytales like Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty but with two fundamental changes. On one hand, the heroines are portrayed in a powerful light as women that live for their own and don't wait around to be rescued. Also, each of Ariana's stories capture her protagonists in a typical Indian setting- stemming from experiences of Ariana's own life. This allows young girls to better appreciate their identity as females and as Indians while also learning to be independent, strong and self-reliant.
