finally pulled the trigger on my first solo winter camp on the river. After a long week of work, I launched the kayak with one goal in mind — find a place to camp, catch a few smallmouth bass, and see if I could make it through a freezing night on the river. The bite started slow, but once the blade bait found the right seam the smallmouth started showing up. Once the sun dropped, the temperature followed. Camp was set, the fire was rolling, and dinner was on the menu — steak fajitas cooked over the fire, homemade bread, and honey butter inspired by the Outdoor Boys. But the weather had other plans. Overnight the temperature dropped below freezing, snow and sleet rolled in, and the riverbank turned into ice. Morning brought fresh coffee, bacon over the fire, and another shot at river smallmouth before packing up camp. This trip is all about slowing down and experiencing the river at water level — fishing winter patterns, cooking over a fire, and spending a cold night alone on the bank. If you enjoy kayak fishing, river camping, smallmouth bass, and outdoor adventure, you’re in the right place.
