Lesson 5 of the Play By Ear Challenge focuses on hearing and playing the three major chords in the key of D. We discuss the I, IV and V chords, how to listen for them as you play, and give and example of doing so. View dulcimer chord charts from Stephen Seifert here: https://www.stephenseifert.com/new-page We recommend watching the following video by Eddie Collins for a good explanation of the chords and how to logically determine which chord to use. • Hearing Chord Changes by Ear–Lesson One Song of the week: Just As I Am We recommend you listen to the melody file from wncdc.org. After you are able to audiate the melody, learn to play it on your instrument. Link to wncdc.org: https://wncdc.org/Tab_Index.php#alph_J Once you have conquered the melody only, listen to the strummed audio file of “Just As I Am” from encyclopedia.org. At this point, concentrate on hearing the chords changes. Audiate the chords and try playing the chords changes along with the audio file. Then, start adding the chords into your play by ear version of the song. Also, remember to practice active listening. We enjoy the following website for that: MurtR Guitar Cindy has had music lessons since she was 6 years old, but never learned to play by ear. That’s a skill she is determined to develop in 2026. Would you be interested in learning this skill too? If so, join us in this challenge. Check out some other videos from our channel. The “Dry Run” videos show the entire process of us attempting to make a good recording of our music. You get to see the mistakes, the chatter, the mishaps and all of the fun we have. Hopefully, you enjoy both our music and our humor while watching. We would love to have new subscribers and comments. Thanks
