Soraya Verjee performs Cecile Chaminade’s “Meditation” (taken from her 6 Romances sans paroles, op.76) in the University of Liverpool Department of Music’s Hub. Did you know that Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944) was the first woman in France to receive the Légion d’Honneur in 1913? She was one of the few female composers that were very well-received during their time, composing over 400 works, including for solo piano, chamber music, orchestral music and opera, and had numerous concert tours during her performing career. However, since researching into her life nowadays, many critics and scholars often note her works as purely ‘salon music’ in comparison with other composers of her time, such as Franck, Saint-Saëns and Liszt. This is the final piece of her 6 Romances sans paroles, op.76; a reflective piece with harp-like textures, which swell to a climax, before dissolving into a peaceful stillness at the end. A very underrated composer, and one that I overlooked when I discovered her. ✨
