LACOCK Village Tour: The Most Charming (and Historic!) Village in England Lacock is a perfectly preserved, quintessential English village in Wiltshire, often described as stepping back in time. It is a unique destination because the village, along with Lacock Abbey, is almost entirely owned and managed by the National Trust. This stewardship has ensured its unspoiled appearance, with medieval-style streets lined with timber-framed and stone cottages that remain free of modern intrusions like satellite dishes or overhead wires. The village centre maintains a charming, historic character, featuring a 14th-century Tithe Barn, the medieval St Cyriac's Church, and traditional 15th-century inns like The Sign of the Angel, making it a peaceful and picturesque place to stroll. The main attraction is Lacock Abbey, which was originally founded as a nunnery in 1232 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury. After the dissolution of the monasteries, it was converted into a Tudor country house while retaining its beautiful medieval cloisters, which visitors can still explore. Lacock is also world-renowned as the birthplace of modern photography. In the 1830s, the Abbey was home to scientist and inventor William Henry Fox Talbot, who created the world's first photographic negative—a small image of one of the Abbey's windows. This legacy is celebrated at the on-site Fox Talbot Museum, which charts the history of photography from its earliest days to the present. Due to its remarkably untouched architecture, Lacock is a hugely popular filming location for major screen productions. Film enthusiasts will recognise various spots around the village and the Abbey's cloisters from their appearances as Hogwarts' corridors and classrooms in several Harry Potter films. The village has also served as a backdrop for numerous period dramas, including the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice and *Downton Abbey*. Visitors can take special walks to find these famous locations, browse the small independent shops and honesty boxes, or enjoy a meal at one of the historic pubs, all of which contribute to the village's truly timeless and immersive appeal.
