BBC South East has reported on a mother’s decision to go public about the shame she endured when becoming pregnant at 16 and the subsequent forced adoption of her son. In the film, broadcast on 29 January 2025, Jan Doyle tells of having no choice but to sign away her baby. She is one of hundreds of thousands of mothers who had their babies forcibly taken for adoption. Jan is now calling on the UK Government to formally apologise for forced adoption practices which took place in England from the 1950s through to the 1970s. She waited 62 years to find out what had happened to her son and is one of many calling for the government to make accessing records and tracing easy. For many mothers, time is of the essence. Now in their senior years, they need to reconnect before it’s too late. Author, Karen Constantine contributed to the BBC report and has included Jan’s story in her book, Taken: Experiences of Forced Adoption, available via PRAM Publications at https://prampublications.com
