CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Local health care providers are recommending a few foods that could help your memory. Dr. Rhonna Shatz is a memory specialist who recently stopped by Local 12's "What's Happening in Health?" show. She says green vegetables are the first thing you should eat to maintain memory, whether you like them or not. "So one of the things to know is that all of us differ in our ability to taste this, and if we can't taste bitterness, we're actually at a much higher risk of having Alzheimer's disease and having a high body weight," Dr. Shatz said. Dr. Shatz says the Mind Diet is a combination of foods you can buy at almost any grocery store or market. It's a combination of plant-based foods, such as vegetables, beans, fruits, fish and olive oil from the Mediterranean way of eating combined with the DASH diet to stop hypertension, which includes low-fat dairy foods like milk, cheese and yogurt. "In the Mind Diet, each of the foods have a particular benefit in terms of what we call "antioxidant potential," the ability to reduce the inflammatory processes that we think really underlie Alzheimer's as well as other dementias. Dr. Shatz is also a memory researcher at the UC Health Gardner Neuroscience Institute, which is holding its annual Forget-Me-Not Gala Sept. 28.
