A FORM OF GODLINESS… BUT DENYING THE POWER? ✝️ Today we’re unpacking a powerful phrase from 2 Timothy 3:5: “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” What does that really mean? Often, we assume it refers to someone who claims to be a Christian but struggles with sin. Someone who doesn’t “look” the part. Someone who falls short. But Scripture points us somewhere deeper. The Pharisees looked righteous. They tithed. They followed the law. They held positions of influence. Outwardly, they had a form of godliness. Yet Jesus rebuked them because they were trusting in their performance — not in Him. The power of godliness is not church attendance. It’s not spiritual routines. It’s not religious activity. The power is the Cross. As 1 Corinthians 1:18 says: “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” The power is Jesus Christ crucified. The power is grace. The power is salvation by faith — not by works. You can look religious and still deny the power. You deny the power when you trust in yourself instead of Christ. We will stumble. We will struggle. We are not perfect. The question isn’t, “Do you perform well?” The question is, “What are you trusting in for salvation?” If your hope is in your ability to maintain righteousness — that’s fragile. If your hope is in Jesus — that’s unshakable. SCRIPTURE FOCUS 2 Timothy 3:5 1 Corinthians 1:18 Ephesians 2:8–9 REFLECTION • Are you trusting in your performance or in Christ’s finished work? • Do you sometimes measure spirituality by outward appearance? • Where is your true confidence for salvation? PRAYER Lord, guard our hearts from pride. Help us never to trust in our own righteousness. Teach us to cling to the Cross as our only hope. Amen.
