If you live in a cold climate, even wintertime can be a time to plant food that will feed you and your family forever. In fact, this is one of the best times and one of the easiest ways to plant anything that is native and perennial to your region, if you live in a cold climate. Winter Sow TREE FRUIT, NUTS & NATIVE PERRENIALS for BEST GERMINATION & COLD & MOIST STRATIFICATION. Instead of doing it the complicated way, DO it the WAY NATURE DOES IT! For comparison, here is the complicated way that many courses will teach you - for example, you have probably heard of cold stratifying your native seeds so that they can germinate and about putting your seeds in the fridge or the freezer for 1 month, or 2 months, or more, some of which you would need to take out of the freezer and warm up for a few weeks and then put back into the freezer! This is all very complicated. Not to mention the risk of losing seeds to mold while you change them between the freezer to the fridge to a warm spot and back, all the while keeping your seeds in little baggies with wet napkins inside.... And, figuring out when you will finally put them outside is another issues! It's just too complicated. In nature, wherever you live, the seeds of native plants spend the whole year outside. And if you live in a cold climate, the same is true. So, in fact, that cold and those winter conditions are precisely what your seeds need. Those are the conditions they have always had in the wild. Those conditions are what cold stratifying in fridges or freezers is trying to imitate. Why imitate, when you can do it the natural way? Plant your seeds outside! You can do this as of the fall, if you'd like. However, if you haven't done it yet and it's January or even February, you still have time! So come have a look how we WINTER SOW our seeds in the middle of winter in our Zone 5b-6a Food Forest!
