(17 Oct 1995) Natural Sound Rebel troops have wrested control of a town in central Afghanistan, deepening the crisis for the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani. According to a government estimate, forces loyal to Rabbani now control only about one quarter of the country. APTV cameras have been with government troops south of Kabul during a separate action by Taliban guerillas. Government forces relentlessly shelled this palace occupied by Taliban troops. The Darulaman Palace is just south of the Afghanistan capital of Kabul. During the past week Taliban fighters advanced on the shattered capital capturing small towns, such as this one surrounding the palace, before government forces stopped them on the outskirts of the city. This fight for control of the palace is one of many battles the government forces are waging against the Taliban and other rebel groups. . Taliban forces, made up of former Islamic religious students, have made sweeping gains in the south and west of Afghanistan in recent months. They have vowed to topple the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani, which they accuse of corruption. After defeating the communists in 1992 Afghanistan's 10 main Islamic factions which were formerly allied, have splintered and turned on each other. Since then more than 25-thousand people, mostly civilians have died in bitter fighting. Disgust with corruption and the in-fighting led to the creation of the Taliban. The Taliban troops made it as far as the Rishkor Hills, which are on the southern limits of Kabul, but government forces shelled them heavily and claim they drove back the rebels. These government troops are some of the thousands that were deployed, along with dozens of tanks, in a security ring around the capital to try to stop the Taliban offensive. Forces loyal to the government are said to now only control about one quarter of the country following the fall of another town in central Afghanistan earlier this week.
