Salesforce Field Usage Report | Discover Unused Fields with Metazoa Snapshot Metazoa Snapshot includes a powerful Field Usage report that helps Salesforce administrators and architects understand how fields are actually used across their org. This report analyzes real record data to determine whether fields are heavily used, rarely used, or completely unused, making it an extremely valuable tool for cleanup, optimization, and technical debt reduction. To begin, you simply select one or more Salesforce objects from the list on the left. Then you choose the records you want to analyze on the right. Records can be selected using filters, SOQL queries, random sampling, or by selecting records directly by name. In this example, we analyze all Account records. Once the report is generated, Snapshot scans the selected records and analyzes how each field is populated. Because this can involve scanning many fields across large datasets, the report may take a few minutes to run depending on the size of the object. You can also schedule the report to run later if needed. The report uses color coding to make results easy to understand. Fields shown in green are heavily used, fields in yellow have marginal usage, and fields in red indicate little or no usage. This makes it easy to quickly identify fields that may be candidates for cleanup or refactoring. Each row in the report includes detailed statistics about a field. You will see the field name, label, and field type, along with metrics showing how often the field is used. The report shows the total number of records analyzed, how many contain values, how many are empty, and how many only contain the default value. Additional metrics include the percentage of records using the field, the percentage empty, and the percentage using the default value. Another particularly useful statistic is the percentage of distinct values. For example, an Account Name field may be almost completely distinct, while a field like Zip Code may have many repeated values. The report also shows the last time a field value was edited, as well as metadata information such as when the field was created and last modified. In addition, Snapshot calculates field dependencies, showing how many other metadata assets reference each field. This helps you understand the potential impact of removing or modifying a field. Lightning links are included so you can jump directly into Salesforce Setup and view the field configuration inside the Lightning interface. If you select certain field types, such as picklists, the report can also show the most common and least common values. This can help you identify obsolete values or opportunities to simplify picklists. The report also allows you to edit important field classifications directly from the interface. For example, you can update business status, security classification, help text, or compliance group settings directly from the report. Snapshot supports exporting the report in multiple formats so it can be shared with team members or used for documentation and governance purposes. You can also ask Snapshot AI to explain the report. The AI assistant understands the meaning of each column and allows you to have an interactive discussion about what the data means and what actions might be appropriate. When you move to the Display Report tab, Snapshot consolidates all selected objects into a single rollup report. This provides a comprehensive view of field usage across multiple objects at once. The Field Usage tool also includes a dashboard that presents field usage information visually, along with a summary table that rolls up usage statistics for easier review. Additional options include the ability to include long text fields in the analysis, trim tables to focus on specific columns or objects, and adjust the thresholds that define low, medium, and high usage. Finally, Snapshot includes Smart Deploy capabilities that allow you to take action on the results. Fields identified as low usage can be selected and prepared for deployment changes. You can validate the deployment, execute the change in your org, or save the job list for release management later. The Snapshot Field Usage report provides deep insight into how fields are used in your Salesforce org and helps teams safely identify opportunities to reduce technical debt and simplify their data model. #Salesforce #SalesforceAdmin #SalesforceDeveloper #SalesforceMetadata #SalesforceFieldUsage #Metazoa #MetazoaSnapshot
