Justice Albie Sachs, James April (former MK fighter), and Advocate Joel Krige, share their memories of being held at Cape Town's Roeland Street Prison. They were all held here because of their anti-Nationalist government activities. This poignant, informative and humourous in parts, event was a one-off. It was on 20 March 2025, the day before South Africa's annual Human Rights public holiday. It was held at the former prison, now the Western Cape Archive and Records Service on the eastside of Cape Town's city centre. It was Mr April's 85th birthday and his first time back since being imprisoned for his fight against Apartheid. Justice Sachs, 90 in January, represented Mr April when he was an advocated (and many others campaigning against Apartheid). He himself was imprisoned for his freedom fighting. Advocate Joel Krige was imprisoned here for a night when he was a student. He visits the Archives for his land claims work and still gets a horrible feeling walking through the main entrance.
