(15 Sep 2022) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Edgartown, Massachusetts – 15 September 2022 1. The bell tolling on the steeple of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church that houses dozens of migrants from Venezuela who were sent to Massachusetts by Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis without notice to local authorities 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Folcarelli, CEO, Martha's Vineyard Community Services: ++COVERED++ "It's been quite a couple of days here on Martha's Vineyard. Yesterday at 3:45 (p.m.), 48 people presented on the campus at Martha's Vineyard Community Services. And I was sitting in my office preparing to conclude the day and I see people with their luggage and backpacks and children and adults and families coming on our campus. So I went out to greet them and learned that they were Venezuelan refugees as they describe themselves, and none in the group were English speaking. So I secured a translator." 3. Close up of signage calling for online emergency donations to help the unexpected migrants 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Folcarelli, CEO, Martha's Vineyard Community Services: ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ "They thought they were coming from Texas to Boston … before Texas, it was about a two-month journey to get to the United States. And they were expecting to come to Martha's Vineyard Community Services. They were told that they would have a job and they would have housing. And we had a program for them basically – that they would have work and they would have house." 8. Close up of signage calling for volunteers to help the migrants 9. Close up of a red document folder carried by one of the migrants 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Folcarelli, CEO, Martha's Vineyard Community Services: ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ "And so they had folders. Each had a red folder, and in the folder was a brochure to community services. There was a map from the Martha's Vineyard Airport to community services, and that's how they found us. And so from that point forward, we just worked on connecting with all of our community partners to get them shelter for the night and get them some support to help them with their next steps." 11. Wide of migrants 12. Close up of welcoming signage in front of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church 13. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Folcarelli, CEO, Martha's Vineyard Community Services: ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ "Finding housing for 48 people in a matter of a couple of hours was a huge challenge. Thankfully, we have wonderful community partners, including St Andrew's Episcopal Church – that's where we are – 14. Wide of the church building 15. Wide of volunteers waiting to take donations and sign up other volunteers to help the migrants 16. Wide of the sheriff's community outreach vehicle parked in front of the church 17. Medium of law enforcement officers talking in front of the church 18. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Folcarelli, CEO, Martha's Vineyard Community Services: ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ "That was really extremely disheartening. It was ... You know, these ... these migrants who presented yesterday ... Hi! One right behind you, smiling at me. So, you know, long journey and and tired. Very tired people. So the fact that they were in a way duped, it seems – they were told something that wasn't the case and traveled a long way to ... to be, you know, duped in a way. It was really, really kind of overwhelming. Yeah, kind of overwhelming and sad. Yeah." 19.
