(1)体重が重い人はみんな太っている。 Everyone who is heavy is fat. (2) 体重が重い人はみんな太っているとは限らない。 Not everyone who is heavy is fat. (3) 体重が重い人はみんな太っていない。 Everyone who is heavy is not fat. 「とは限らない」is a grammar that is used for partial negation. Example (1) is used if you want to say something that is generally thought to be the case, or if the speaker thinks so. Example (2) is used for partial negation. Example (3) is a statement of total negation. わけではないVSとは限らない When "I" or “We” become the subject, it often sounds unnatural when "とは限らない" is used. △私は飲み会が好きだが、お酒が好きとは限らない。 ○私は飲み会が好きだが、お酒が好きなわけではない。 When speaker talks about something that he/she already knows, it often sounds unnatural when "とは限らない" is used. △田中さんはアメリカに20年住んでいるが、英語が上手だとは限らない。 ○田中さんはアメリカに20年住んでいるが、英語が上手なわけではない。 ============================================================ わけではない 【Verb plain style + わけではない/わけじゃない】 【いadjective + わけではない/わけじゃない】 【なadjective + なわけではない/なわけじゃない】 it doesn’t mean that, it is not true that, I don’t mean that, it is not the case that, ============================================================ 努力をした人が誰でも成功するとは限らない。 Not everyone who made an effort will succeed. 親や先生に言われたとおりにすることが必ずしも正しいとは限らない。 It is not always correct to do what your parents and teachers tell you to. 日本語の教科書に書いてあることが日常で使われている日本語だとは限らない。 What is written in Japanese textbooks is not always the Japanese that is used in everyday life. 留学せずに日本語が喋しゃべれるようにならないとは限らない。 It is not always the case that you will not be able to speak Japanese without studying in Japan. ～からといって～とは限らない just because… does not mean that… 青信号だからといって道を渡っている最中に車が来ないとは限らない。 Just because there’s a green man it does not mean that a car will not come while you are crossing the road. 男だからといって料理ができないとは限らないし、女だからといって料理ができるとは限らない。 男だからといって料理ができないとも限らないし、女だからといって料理ができるとも限らない。 Just because someone is male doesn't mean he can't cook, and just because someone is female doesn't mean she can cook. ～って限らない is used in casual conversation A.早く結婚して幸せになりたいなあ。 A. I want to get married early and be happy. B.結婚することが幸せって限らないよ。大変なこともたくさんあるよ！ B. Marriage is not always happy. There are many difficulties! A.このパスタなんてどう？おいしそう！ A. How about this pasta? looks delicious! B. おいしそうに見える食べ物が必ずしもおいしいって限らないよ！ B. Food that looks delicious is not necessarily delicious!
