Walking along Machida Kaido, the scent of the old road comes back to life whenever the sounds of traffic die down. Along Route 16, white walls and the gardens of old homes line the quiet streets, revealing a layer of time even amid the hustle and bustle of modern times. Zuikoji Temple was founded during the Azuchi-Momoyama period and once served as a temple school, which became the precursor to an elementary school in the Meiji era. Its history as a source of learning for the local community is alive and well in the clear air of the temple grounds. While the main hall is new, the years of its history gently envelop it in the cobblestones in front of the gate. Crossing the Sakai River once again, we return to Tokyo. The water's surface is smooth, blending straight and meandering sections, still retaining the memory of the land. Walking further, we arrive at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Founded in the early Edo period, the Kannon Hall, water house, and bell tower all retain the scent of wood that is over a century old. Each sculpture is surely engraved with human prayer.
