Farmers Save Time and Water: The Russian River Telemetry Study

California farmers save time and money using real-time water data in a new study. Local landowners and water managers share why they joined the study and what they hope to learn. The Russian River Telemetry Study uses cellular and satellite communications to make water data available to farmers in near real-time, enabling them to make quick decisions about irrigation and maintenance. It also centralizes the data in a standard format, so farmers can more easily do the required reporting. This automatic data gathering saves water and helps the entire region make limited water supplies go further in the Russian River watershed. The Russian River Telemetry Study is led by the Telemetry Research Unit at the California State Water Resources Control Board, with support from the California Water Data Consortium, Balance Hydrologics, and local partners.
