Crime and security experts believe that Covid-19 may lead to a massive spike in crime as stay-at-home orders end. There are multiple factors cooked up by the pandemic that have led to desperation, increased stress, and a historic surge in gun sales. Michael Haggard, a board member of the National Crime victims Bar Association and a renowned negligent security attorney says business and commercial property owners should be aware of these grim possibilities. Haggard says your favorite local businesses have the responsibility to consider security realities in the coming months and beyond. The pre-pandemic security measures won’t cut it. 1. Desperate times lead to desperate measures. The United States has experienced the greatest recession and job loss since the great depression. The number of people who have lost their jobs—some permanently—have led to desperate times. Crimes of opportunity and desperation tend to spike when people can’t afford basic necessities. 2. Record-setting surge in gun sales. As the pandemic began there was a record number of guns sold as businesses that sell firearms were considered essential. More guns, more violence. ARTICLE:. Three months ago, the thought of a store employee getting shot for telling someone to put on a mask would not have remotely made any sense. Now it is a reality. Business owners need to balance security and health safety and give consideration to how to deal with the new risks that COVID has created. Haggard says some of the most basic security measures to be considered include adding or increasing the number of security cameras, guards, increasing parking lot lighting on every property.
