NBC Austin story detailing how Funtime Handels — the Austrian manufacturer found negligent in the death of 14-year-old Tyre Sampson — has reportedly sold a new drop tower ride slated to be built in Austin, Texas, despite not paying any portion of the $310 million Florida jury verdict entered against it. Tyre’s case was tried by Michael Haggard and Kimberly Wald on behalf of his mother, Nekia Dodd. The jury spoke. The court entered judgment. Yet to date, while continuing to operate and sell rides in the United States, Funtime has not paid any portion of that judgment. Michael Haggard spoke with NBC Austin about the ongoing fight to enforce the verdict. This story is about more than a single ride. It raises a larger question: Can a foreign corporation continue doing business in the U.S. while ignoring an American court order? Nekia Dodd’s courage in speaking out is about protecting other families. Accountability only matters if it is enforced.
