Why Ethiopia Is Spending 10% of Its GDP on Africa’s Largest Airport? The East African nation is currently building what will become the largest, and likely most important, airport in all of Africa. The project is highly unusual in several key ways, not the least of which is that Ethiopia is a struggling country, mired by political and economic instability. We’re all familiar with airports. They’re an essential staple of the way the modern world works, and it can be easy in this day and age to take them for granted. But airports can do far more than simply give planes a place to land. In fact, they can completely transform a nation. Such a potential transformation is now beckoning on the horizon for the 135 million people who live in Ethiopia. On January 10th, 2026, ground was broken on this 12-point-5 billion dollar project which is set to make the country’s Oromia region the home of Africa’s largest airport by 2030. The passenger capacity will be more than 4 times that of the country’s current largest airport, and if successful it could turn the geographically centralized African nation into a major hub on the global stage. But of course, potential and practical reality are often frustratingly different things. Ethiopia’s population is one of the youngest and largest of any nation, and the average resident has very low income despite a growing economy. Who will Africa’s largest airport ultimately serve? What is the best-case scenario, and what is the worst? While we can’t project into the future, we can uncover clues and attempt to wrap our minds around this massively important industrial development. In this episode of Looking 4, we’ll touch down in East Africa to examine what is involved in this unprecedented airport project and what we can expect it to look like. We’ll also unpack the unusual context in which it is being built, amid many millions of precarious yet hopeful people for whom the stakes of this project are extraordinarily high. Join us as we explore the now-underway engineering and geopolitical marvel known as Bishoftu International Airport.
