Few passenger aircraft are as well-known as the Boeing 747. The Boeing 747 made its maiden flight in 1969. Twice the size and twice the weight of previous passenger aircraft, it was by far the largest passenger plane in the world and held this record until the first flight of the Airbus A380 in 2010. While the Boeing 777-300 and the Airbus A340-600 were longer than the Boeing 747, none of these aircraft could carry as many passengers. Unlike all other long-haul aircraft, the Boeing 747 had a major advantage: it was available in different versions for various purposes. From the very beginning, the Boeing 747 was offered as a cargo version and as a combi version. From the Boeing 747-100 to the 747-400, the 747 was also available as a short-haul version for frequently used domestic routes, for example, in Japan. A shortened version for extremely long-haul flights, the Boeing 747SP, was primarily used by airlines offering particularly long routes or, as in Africa, those forced to take huge detours due to civil wars. The most famous Boeing 747-200s are the two VC-25As that transport the American President as Air Force One. Following the classic versions, the Boeing 747-100 and 747-200, Boeing attempted to launch a revised version, the Boeing 747-300, in 1982. However, the Boeing 747-300 was not very successful. While more modern than its predecessors, it used the same engines, making it no more efficient. Boeing then completely redesigned the Boeing 747 once again, giving it a new cockpit, new wings with winglets, and new engines. In 1989, Northwest Airlines took delivery of the first new Boeing 747-400. With 694 units built, the Boeing 747-400 was the most successful version. This version was also available as a freighter, combi, and short-haul aircraft. Although four-engine aircraft were becoming increasingly controversial, another Boeing 747 was launched in 2011. The Boeing 747-8 was a completely new design, with a revised aerodynamic profile, a longer fuselage, and the introduction of the brand-new GEnx engines. The freighter version made the maiden flight, followed by the passenger version. Only the two basic versions of the Boeing 747-8 exist; no special short-haul or combi versions were ever built. While the Boeing 747 is becoming increasingly rare in passenger service, it will likely remain in operation as a freighter for a very long time, as many cargo companies rely on the Boeing 747. The last Boeing 747 was delivered in 2023. A total of 1,573 Boeing 747s were built, making it the most produced long-haul aircraft of all time.
