API 650 is the standard governing welded tanks for oil storage. It dictates tank design, fabrication, welding, inspection, and erection requirements. In this video, we are going look at the construction of the Tank Farm for aboveground storage tank (API 650, appendix B) using Computer Aided Design Software (CAD) with the help of AutoCAD Plant 3D 2021 software. We are going to be modelling storage tank farm of crude, residue, diesel and naphtha with their various appurtenance such as Manways for roofs or tank sidewalls, Roof vents, Roof hatches, Nozzles, Ladders, Sampling Box, Step-off platforms, Level indicators, Spiral stairways, earth boss, settlement mark, bleeder vents, loop hole, fire arresting breathing vent with exhale, Sumps including firefighting foaming system (firefighting foaming chamber, sprinklers) on aboveground storage tank and their uses. Don’t forget to subscribe, like and share to get more awesome modelled projects. The size of the tank farm depends on the capacity of total storage tanks needed to store both raw materials and products for the plant. The tank farm is fenced with a wall height (dyke) of around 600mm. Storage tanks are separated in different sections of the tank farm according to their classification which include class A, B, C and excluded petroleum products depending on their flash points. The height of storage tank is equal to half its diameter. The distance between two tanks equal to the diameter of the largest tank while the distance from the tank to the fence wall is half its height. The storage tank is mounted on a tank base which can be Earth foundations without a ringwall, Earth foundations with a concrete ringwall, Earth Foundations with a crushed stone and gravel ringwall or Slab Foundations. Sampling Box: It’s a box where samples are collected for analysis. Depending on the design, the sampling box can contain three valve which are connected to three separate sampling point inside the tank, at the top, the middle and bottom of the tank which also has a stirrer with the use of a diaphragm pump to stir the content before collection. Nozzles: These are openings found on the body of the storage facilities in this case the aboveground storage tank. They are opening that enable fluids (liquid, solid and gas) to be transferred in and out of the tank through external and/or internal components which include pipes, flanges, valves etc. Vents: venting refers to a tank opening that is provided mainly to relieve excess pressure caused by liquid filling a tank and to relieve vacuum that results from liquid being removed from a tank. The purpose of the normal vent is to maintain the pressure inside of the tank when liquids are introduced into or are withdrawn. Clean Out Door: The clean out door (COD) as the name implies is the route through which personnel can easily transport slugs out of the tank during the cleaning process which is accumulated over the years of usage. Manhole: Manhole also known as maintenance hole are often used as an access point for an aboveground storage tank during inspection, maintenance, and tank upgrade. Earthing Boss: The aboveground storage tanks used for storing of crudes and end products which are made from carbon steel are prone to entrapment of electrons from the atmosphere. Hence, proper earthing is required for tanks being fabricated and erected. Settlement Marker: During the erection phase, the settlement marker serves as a device to ascertain the settlement level of the tank or in simple terms to calibrate the settlement level of the tank for future references Etc.
