Gestation in a cow lasts about 9 months (280 days), and how a heifer is managed during this period determines calving ease, calf strength, milk production, fertility and lifetime performance. In this video, we walk through the three main stages of gestation in an in-calf heifer: • Early gestation (0–3 months) – when pregnancy is established and organs begin forming • Mid gestation (4–6 months) – when frame, skeleton and internal organs develop • Late gestation (7–9 months) – when rapid calf growth, udder development and colostrum formation take place We explain why steady growth is key, and why both overfeeding and underfeeding can lead to serious problems such as difficult calving, weak calves, low milk yield, metabolic diseases and poor fertility. This session is ideal for: ✔ Dairy farmers ✔ Beef farmers ✔ Heifer rearers ✔ Anyone interested in improving herd performance Have questions about feeding, weight targets, minerals, or calving preparation? Drop them in the comments and we’ll address them in our Tuesday Review & Q&A session.
