Ronald Soh is a veteran tech entrepreneur from Singapore with over three decades in the IT industry. His passion for technology sparked early – as a young boy in the 1970s he was fascinated by the computers at People’s Park, and his father’s purchase of an IBM 286 PC ignited a lifelong love of computing. In 1993, fresh out of NUS, he founded Win-Pro with the goal of helping small businesses with IT services. In the early days he wrote custom software for SMEs, operating on a shoestring. He even sold PCs in Singapore’s Chinatown to generate revenue – a hands-on that taught him the fundamentals of both software and hardware sales. In 1997, Asian Financial Crisis hit Asia hard, and Win-Pro was pushed to the brink. Ronald later described this time as “not just a financial storm, it was a relationship earthquake,” indicating that the crisis strained not only finances but also business relationships. He pivoted Win-Pro’s strategy – having initially focused on software, he adapted to provide hardware and infrastructure solutions that businesses needed, ensuring diversified revenue streams. The lessons of the crisis profoundly shaped him. He emerged with a resilience and frugality that would become core to his management philosophy, learning to “keep operations lean” and plan conservatively for the long haul. He expanded services into network infrastructure, IT support, and eventually CTO-as-a-Service consulting for SMEs – essentially providing strategic tech guidance to companies without in-house tech leadership. One strategic move was expanding beyond Singapore’s borders: Ronald entrusted a key team member to establish Win-Pro in 2013 in Johor Bahru and 2016 in Kuala Lumpur. Armed with the hard-won knowledge of surviving a crisis, Ronald also became a firm believer in preparing well ahead for tough times. He often stresses the importance of building “unbreakable” business models and planning years in advance for potential downturns. These principles were put to the test during later challenges such as the 2008 global financial crisis and the pandemic. Beyond financial success, Ronald has always kept an eye on the technological evolution and giving back. He ensured Win-Pro stayed current by embracing emerging tech – from early ecommerce and cloud services to today’s AI and cybersecurity solutions. He prides himself on integrating AI, automation, and advanced IT tools to help clients stay ahead. Today, Ronald Soh stands as a seasoned entrepreneur who has literally built an “empire from Ground Zero.” From a curious boy peering at electronics in a market stall to the founder of a multi-country IT services firm, his journey has been marked by early passion, bold risk-taking, devastating setbacks, and remarkable comebacks. / ronaldsoh2 / ronaldsoh / ronaldsoh2 / ronaldsoh https://x.com/ronaldsoh Timeline 02:29 Biggest early hit, the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, no safety nets then. 04:06 No Plan B, no loans, “worst case is zero,” stayed lean to survive. 08:52 Pivot after 1998, from software to IT infrastructure to reduce global competition. 10:54 Core lesson, build recurring income to cushion crises, target +10% recurring yearly, compounding matters. 17:04 COVID playbook, inspired by Bill Gates’ pandemic warning 19:45 What are you preparing next? 24:46 Crisis prep via ecosystem and collaboration with BNI 32:00 How will World War 3 will affect the growth AI? 37:00 What to do after a crisis? 39:18 Advise to young people 42:37 What is your dream?
