The urban rail industry is looking to mobile broadband to enable its digital transformation, to provide improved services and security through high-quality, high-capacity communications to both passengers and transit system operators. For current urban communications-based train control (CBTC) and its next generation there will be a transition from dedicated, private, closed industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) radio band communications for signaling and other services, including video and passenger information, to dedicated private mobile communications through network slices on open public 5G infrastructure. With its higher reliability, lower latencies, and ultra-broadband connectivity, 5G, unlike current ISM technology, will support many important applications, such as predictive/smart maintenance, and enable monitoring, analysis, and exploitation of energy and asset information for the entire urban rail system, including the power grid, stations, rolling stock, infrastructure, and ticket sales. Today’s data and multimedia information transport demands need 5G, and by adopting it, urban rail operators will improve safety, optimize costs, and make their services more attractive. The mobile network will become the cornerstone of transit system operators’ digital transformations, positioning mobile network operators (MNOs) as their value-added partners. Speakers & Agenda: Walter Kinio, Vice President of Research & Innovation at Thales Canada, will explore the key needs and main 5G use cases for urban rail transit system operators; Bojan Subasic, Principal Product Line Architect for Data Communication Systems at Thales Canada, will review future mobile communications options, how to best leverage 5G deployments, and the challenges in transitioning from legacy communication systems; Chris Neisinger, Chief Technology Officer at Guavus, will discuss how MNOs can help urban rail transit operators get the greatest value from 5G by improving services and security, as well as customer experience; Edan Kabatchnik, Vice President of Product Management, Guavus Platform at Guavus, will moderate this live session. Audience: Communications service providers (CSPs), mobile network operators (MNOs), urban rail transit operators, IoT and railway equipment manufacturers and suppliers, and professionals working in the urban rail transportation industry.
