Hi, I’m Matt Capell with Capell Flooring and Interiors here in Meridian, Idaho. In this video, I want to share something that’s easy to overlook but makes a big difference when it comes to protecting your floors and keeping your area rugs looking great — area rug pad or foam. When you invest in a custom area rug, you’re adding warmth, texture, and design to your home. But many people don’t realize that the backing of most carpets is rough — almost like sandpaper. Without a proper rug pad, that rough surface can rub against your hardwood, laminate, or vinyl flooring and cause permanent scratches over time. That’s why we strongly recommend using a quality rug pad or foam under every custom rug. Not only does it help protect your floors, but it also adds extra comfort, stability, and safety. In our showroom, we show two main types of pads. One has a textured side that grips the floor slightly — not sticky, but just enough friction to help keep your rug from sliding around. The other is softer and adds extra cushion underfoot. Both options are cut slightly smaller than your rug, usually about an inch or two shorter on each side. This small detail helps the rug “ease down” along the edges instead of creating a bump or trip hazard. If your rug is very small, we may glue it to one edge for stability, but for larger rugs, we leave the foam unattached. This makes rolling, storing, or moving the rug much easier — especially since a large rug can be surprisingly heavy once it’s bound and ready to go. There’s also a great tip if you’re ordering carpet for a custom area rug: some manufacturers, like Shaw, offer “soft back” carpet styles. These don’t have the rough sandpaper-like backing, which means a pad isn’t always necessary unless you want additional cushion. At Capell Flooring and Interiors, we create custom area rugs every week for homes across Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, and the entire Treasure Valley. We’ll help you choose the right carpet style, edge finish, and pad or foam so your rug looks great and performs well for years to come. We believe great floors start with great details — and something as simple as choosing the right rug pad can protect your investment and add comfort to your home. If you have questions about area rugs, rug pads, or custom carpet options, we’d love to help.
