#cookstrait #picton #marlboroughsounds We travelled to Wellington from Picton on the Bluebridge ferry across the Cook Strait. When travelling between the north and south islands of New Zealand you most commonly do so via the Cook Strait. There are predominantly two ferry companies which offer this service, Interislander and Bluebridge. In this video you can see the Interislander ferry waiting to leave the port in Picton (south Island) while we head out through the Marlborough sounds via the Cook Strait, sailing on the Bluebridge ferry heading for Wellington (north island). We have made this journey in both directions and both times we chose the Bluebridge service over its competitor. The main reason being the cost. We found the saving to be quite substantial for the three and a half hour crossing. You make your booking online before boarding, it's very simple and straight forward. E-tickets are sent to your phone which you show at the port and that's it! You can travel as a foot passenger or with your car / motorhome. Food & drink available onboard although expect to pay a higher cost than when on land. We happened to be crossing in perfect conditions and even spotted a pod of dolphins as they played in the wake from the ferry. Don't be fooled by this footage into thinking the Cook Strait is always a peaceful sailing experience. Many ships have met their fate in these winding shipping lanes & notoriously treacherous waters.
