This re-enacted training video shows how a first aider may apply a dressing to grazed knuckles. Wounds to the knuckles can be painful, and it's essential that they heal properly because flexible movement of our fingers in particular is so important in our everyday life. If you think that the wound needs a stitch, or that bending of the knuckles will cause bleeding to restart, then the patient needs to go to see a Health Care Professional, to get the best possible treatment. Bad scarring to the knuckles could result in restricted movement. So for a simple minor graze, with minimal blood loss, our aim is clean and dress the wound. If you are treating somebody other than yourself, you'll need to:- Sit the person down. Ask how it happened. Look for signs of confusion. Gain consent. Put on gloves. Clean the wound (if you have consent and you think you can do so without causing further damage). Now for the dressing. Choose a bandage that is appropriate for the size of the wound. If it's just a couple of knuckles that have been damaged, then the small 'eye-patch' dressing may suffice. Avoid touching the sterile pad, let the 'short tail' of the bandage hang down, and then use the 'long tail' to wrap around the fingers, and secure by tying off the two tails. Try to avoid bandaging the thumb to the rest of the hand. This feels uncomfortable and severely restricts what the person can do with that hand. Once the dressing is completed, if you are in doubt about the severity of the wound then they should attend a Minor Injury Unit, otherwise advise them to check the wound in the morning for the next day or two. If it seems to be getting infected (increasing heat, pain, swelling and redness) then they should seek further help from a health care professional. If this is a work place accident, remember to fill in an accident report. Some wounded areas should always be considered for further assessment by a health care professional:- Wounds to the face. Wounds to the hands. Wounds to the feet. Wounds to the genitals.
