Old Hammerwich Railway - Hammerwich to Chasewater

Welcome to Hiking Required and another episode in my local adventures series. All part of getting outdoors more, doing more outdoors and Being More! Outdoors. In this episode I am hiking from Hammerwich to Chasewater on the Lichfield to Chasewater Greenway. This used to be an old railway line, part of the South Staffordshire Line, which sadly closed to passengers in January 1965 as part of the cuts introduced by Beeching, although it continued to be in use up until 2001. The route has been undergoing work to remove the track and sleepers to make this a way for walkers and cyclists to use. The main work to do this completed in October 2025 and the Greenway is now open for the public to enjoy. Hiking is a great way to maintain your physical and mental wellbeing and whilst getting into the hills and mountains is a great way to enjoy being outdoors, sometimes you might want or need to look a little closer to home. To help give you ideas, I am curating a series of my local adventures, which I hope will inspire you the venture out to create your own! In this video, I make my way across country, via permitted paths, to access this Greenway at Hammerwich Station. Turning right I will head towards Chasewater before climbing off the old line just after passing under the A5 at “Charrington’s Lights”. You could carry on towards Brownhills from here but I didn’t on this occasion. The way to Chasewater Country Park follows the Wyrley and Essington Canal Towpath to Anglesey Wharf and then paths up to the Chasewater Dam, where I will close this video. It has to be said, that the colours of autumn were still spectacular and that this is another hike that filled my soul with new energy!
