APD Air Unit Uncovers Escaped Car Thief Hiding in Dumpster-Zone Officers Make Arrest Haul Suspect to Jail There is no safe hiding place for suspects when APD’s Phoenix Air is at work. On January 17th, 2022, around 5:37 pm, Zone 3 officers responded to a call regarding an auto theft, with a 1-year-old child inside, which had just occurred in Zone 5. Dispatch provided a lookout for the stolen red Ford Focus which was last seen traveling into Zone 3. Officers began canvassing the area and quickly located a vehicle matching the description, traveling near University and Pryor St. SW. Officers requested additional backup along with the APD Phoenix Air Unit while maintaining a visual of the suspect vehicle. The suspect driver and passenger attempted to flee from officers but struck a stop sign. Both suspects then exited the car and fled on foot. The suspect driver ran towards 1770 Richmond Circle SE. The passenger ran towards Jonesboro Rd SE. Several units, including K-9 and Phoenix, conducted a canvass of the area for both the driver and passenger. The Phoenix heat sensing technology was able to locate the suspect driver hiding inside of a large dumpster under mounds of trash. He was taken into custody without incident. The suspect passenger remains outstanding at this time. Zone 5 officers successfully located the child at another business location. The child did not appear to have sustained any injuries. The suspect driver was arrested and identified as Terrance Patterson. He was charged with: Kidnapping, Cruelty to Children, Theft by taking and Obstruction.
