This wasn't just some freak accident—last year, the machine digging tunnels had created a sinkhole, and for the past seven months, workers had been pumping thousands of liters of grout, cement, and foam into the ground to stabilize it. Now, that foam was causing the dangerous gas leak. What makes this even more concerning is that Snowy Hydro, the company running the project, never revealed this breach to the public. Instead, they focused on flashy videos and press releases, brushing the issue under the rug. The Snowy 2.0 project was meant to be a big deal for Australia, pitched as a “nation-building” effort. It was initially supposed to cost $2 billion and start producing power by next year. Now? The budget has blown out to $12 billion, and it’s delayed for at least another four years. A lot of this trouble is blamed on the tunnel-boring machine named Florence. Florence was supposed to dig a 15km tunnel under Kosciuszko National Park, but it’s barely moved—only 150 meters in.
