Abstract: Advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial analysis methods have significantly contributed to data driven, evidence based decision-making within industry and government. Geospatial data analysis has a wide range of organizational applications, from increasing the efficiency of transportation and logistics networks to identifying potential markets for strategic expansion, and from determining optimal facility locations to delivering financial products and services in a spatially targeted manner for promoting growth and equity. The contribution of geospatial analysis to policy design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in domains such as public health, urban transportation, housing, education, disaster management, etc. is also well established. This workshop aims to provide a general overview of the value of reasoning and analysis using geospatial data in the contexts of business strategy and public policy. Focus will be on the evolution of GIS, traditional as well as new and emerging data sources, data visualization, fundamentals of geospatial analysis and modeling, and examples of GIS applications by private companies and government agencies for strategic decision-making. The objective is to make participants aware of the developments in the field of geographic information science, and underscore its importance in management practice, education and research.
