I've repurposed the PIC12-like microcontroller from a meteor light (Shower LED Lights from Robert Dyas) to animate the surface mount LEDs that I've soldered into a medal kit from The Works. I had to trace the connections of the meteor light PCB in order to figure out how the SMD LEDs should be connected. Due to the size constraints, I've opted for a 2-layer PCB design. To avoid mucking about with chemicals or waiting for a PCB service to deliver 10 boards, I've instead prototyped the design by sticking copper slug tape to two layers of paper. The LEDs are soldered directly to the copper tape -- where necessary I've had to cut holes in the top paper layer to solder to the copper strips in the 2nd layer.
