Lembas Bread Today we are kickstarting a series that will go on for the next couple weeks where my recipes will be Lord of the Rings themed since the new show "The Rings of Power" is coming out on September 1st. Stay tuned for some fun and delicious recipes! This is one of my favorite fictional foods ever, because it is a great allegory that JRR Tolkein came up with where the bread provides life like Jesus, and, as an English teacher, I love a great allegory. The bread in the world of Lord of the Rings is never described as being something that is delicious or sought out to eat for its taste, but is a sort of last resort traveling food that is described as being more of a chewing exercise than anything. That being said, I set out to try to make something that is both true to the world and seems reasonable for them to make while also being delicious. The result is a sort of a cross between hard tack (since it's a traveling food) and a biscuit; but the best part is that it has a refreshing citrus flavor due to the main liquid being citrus juice and zest. They are not super sweet, but are best enjoyed with some honey if you have any on you (especially creamed honey which is my favorite). This may seem like a silly food from Lord of the Rings, but, trust me, these are just as delicious here as they would be in Middle-Earth although probably much more delicious here considering how they are described by Tolkein. C'est bon! Ingredients Dry: 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (may need more) 5/8 cup white sugar 1 tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 stick cold butter (cubed) Wet: 3/4 cup orange juice (and zest of those oranges) 1/2 cup milk Honey!!! (creamed honey is best) Combine dry ingredients until it starts to look like small pebbles. Add in the wet. Mix until it separates from the sides of the bowl adding more flour if it is too wet. Turn out on a floured surface and roll out to 3/8 or 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into small rectangles with a shallow x pattern on them. Bake at 400 Freedomheit for 15-20 minutes or until the edges start to brown and golden. Serve with honey (creamed honey is best).
