“Women will bear 20-25 children if...” Assam CM responds to AIUDF Chief's controversial remark

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma renewed his rivalry with AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal during the foundation laying ceremony of the Morigaon Medical College and bridge at Jagi Bhakat Gaon on Thursday. This comes days after Ajmal stoked controversy with his comments on reproduction. "There are a few politicians in Assam like Badruddin Ajmal who say children should be birthed as early as possible due to high fertility. Child birthing among women cannot be compared to a farm. I have reiterated, our women can give birth to 20 offspring or even 25 but the cost of their food and education costs should be borne by Ajmal. Then we don't have any problem with more children," Sarma said. Himanta Biswa Sarma's comments come days after Ajmal, while discussing the 'love jihad' conspiracy theory, reportedly advised Hindus to marry young to produce more children. As Ajmal's comments were denounced and complaints were lodged with the police across the state, the MP apologised the next day and said he was “ashamed” of the controversy it stoked. He also apologized for hurting sentiments.
