Joe Haymes and His Orchestra (as the Harlem Hot Shots) play the classic "Old Fashioned Love In My Heart", featuring a vocal by Jimmy Underwood and an arrangement by Haymes himself. This was the first of many sides recorded by this band. Trumpeter Pee Wee Erwin described this session: "Our first record was a good one - at least I've always thought so. It was a Joe Haymes arrangement of the James P. Johnson tune, "Old Fashioned Love", and to me it is a fine example of what the band could do, and especially an indication of how far ahead Joe's musical ideas were. Actually, as the record illustrates, he was anticipating the Glenn Miller format by several years - utilising a trumpet lead in unison with the saxophones, although an octave lower. According to the discographical data which is so readily available today, we did it one take, but I remember running it through - I suppose they were checking for recording balance - and really belting it out. When we were finished, Eli Oberstein came out of the control booth, looked straight at me with a grin, and said, "this is a band record, not a trumpet solo". I guess I was trying to blow the filaments out of his microphone.". This recording was originally issued on Victor 24007 (as the Radio Rascals Orchestra), but due to the effects of the Depression, only sold 1165 copies! This Bluebird reissue is from June 1934.
