The lights, often associated with emergency and law enforcement vehicles, were removed after backlash on social media. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) swiftly acted and removed the lights from the Mayor’s car and her escort vehicle once the issue gained traction. This incident brings back the discussion surrounding the use of beacon lights in India, especially after the Union government amended rules in 2017 to restrict the use of red beacon lights on official and political vehicles. Previously, such lights were used by ministers and other officials to signal their importance, but the change aimed to curb VIP culture on the roads.
