►BMW's history with water pumps and cooling systems isn't the best. However, the mechanical water pump BMW uses on the S55 engine in the M3 and M4 is actually quite reliable. Instead of regular replacements, you'll only have to replace your water pump and thermostat at the standard interval. Failing to replace either component can lead to cooling system issues that can overheat the engine. The S55 uses a mechanical pump driven by a belt. The engine thermostat is also a simple mechanical type, ensuring both areas are relatively trouble-free. The replacement is an involved process, but nothing overly significant. Just ensure you have drain pans on hand to catch the engine coolant that must be drained.
