Hike The Big Horn Mine Trail & Explore An Abandoned Mine

The area surrounding Big Horn Mine was home to mountaineer Charles Vincent Dougherty, an American Civil War veteran who fled Arizona after murdering three men who were plotting to jump his claim. Charles lived a life of seclusion in the San Gabriel Mountains and started going by “Vincent” to keep a low profile. He discovered the Big Horn Mine in the late 1800s and it was named after the sheep he was hunting in the area. After a tragic bear attack, Charles Vincent Dougherty succumbed to his injuries in a Los Angeles Hospital, but not before confessing his murderous past to his doctor. Today, the Big Horn Mountain Trail is a beautiful 3.9-mile easy to moderate hike in the Angeles National Forest. It starts near the trailhead to Mt. Baden Powell and the trail offers stunning vistas of Mt. Baldy along the way. The "payoff" is the now abandoned Big Horn Mine at the end of the trail.
