Not to Touch the Earth was recorded sometime between January and May of 1968. The song, originally, was apart of a greater song called the Celebration of the Lizard which was a 17 song/poem that Jim wanted to be the entire B-side of Waiting for the Sun. The Doors actually did record a take of this in the studio. This can be heard in the Doors Rarities album. It didn’t make it on the album but they included the lyrics to the poem on the sleeve of the vinyl and played the song many times live. They did also extract a smaller segment from the poem and made it into its own song. This was of course Not to Touch the Earth. The song is definitely the creepiest Doors song. Jim’s lyrics mixed with Ray and Robby’s guitar give it that spooky sound. Ray uses his Gibson G-101 organ on this and it is one of the only songs where he actually uses the pitch bending feature attached to the volume pedal. On the other organ part he plays the bass line and this part contains the solo. I can only estimate what Ray plays during the solo and the bridge. It’s apparent that he’s arpeggiating, I can only assume that it’s the scale.
