Track 7 from their self-titled debut album released in 1978 copyright Warner Bros. Records. It was recorded at Basing St. Studios in London where the band was formed. One of the best debut albums by any band exploded on the charts due to Mark Knopfler’s outstanding ability as a guitarist and songwriter. The technique and emotion in his unique style of playing make him one of the best to ever pick up the instrument. He used his 1938 National “style O” steel resonator guitar on “Water of Love” and “Wild West End.” The single “Sultans of Swing” was a worldwide hit, reaching No. 8 in the U.K. and No. 4 on Billboard. The album received excellent reviews and reached the Top 20 in ten countries, including No. 2 on Billboard. It was certified 2X Platinum in Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. and 4X Platinum in Canada. The band went on to sell more than 100 million albums, won four Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Written by Mark Knopfler and produced by Muff Winwood. Featuring: Mark Knopfler – Lead vocals, lead & rhythm guitars David Knopfler – Rhythm guitars & background vocals John Illsley – Bass & background vocals Pick Withers – Drums Harry made a bareback rider, proud and free upon a horse And a fine coal miner, for the NCB that was A fallen angel, Jesus on the cross A skatin' ballerina, you should have seen her do the skater's waltz Some people, they got to paint and draw Harry had to work in clay and stone Like the waves comin' to the shore It was in his blood and in his bones He was ignored by all the trendy boys in London, yes and in Leeds He might as well have been makin' toys or strings of beads He couldn't be, no, he couldn't be In the gallery No, no, in the gallery And then you get an artist, he says he doesn't wanna paint at all Just takes an empty canvas, sticks it on a wall Birds of a feather, all the phonies and all of the fakes While the dealers, they get together, then they decide who gets the breaks And who's gonna be, ah, ha, oh, who's gonna be In the gallery, oh, yeah In the gallery, in the gallery No lies, he wouldn't compromise, no junk, no string And all the lies we subsidize they just don't mean a thing, thing I got to say he passed away in obscurity And now all the vultures, they're comin' down from the tree He's gonna be, yeah, oh, he's gonna be In the galle-galle-galle-gallery In the gallery Harry made a bareback rider Made a bareback rider
