Holden Efijy: The 644 HP "Soprano Purple" Masterpiece & 2007 Concept of the Year Description The Holden Efijy is one of the most celebrated concept cars in automotive history. Unveiled at the 2005 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, it was created as a modern, high-performance tribute to the iconic 1953 FJ Holden (Australia's most famous car). Though it looks like a custom 1950s "lead sled," it is built on a heavily modified and lengthened Chevrolet Corvette (C5) chassis, blending retro styling with 21st-century engineering. Performance & Engineering: Powertrain: Under the massive "Soprano Purple" hood sits a 6.0-liter supercharged LS2 V8 engine modified by Ron Harrop. It produces a staggering 644 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque—nearly 11 times the power of the original 1953 FJ. Chassis: The Corvette donor chassis was stretched by approximately 10 inches to accommodate the Efijy's 17-foot (5.2m) body. Suspension: It features a sophisticated air suspension system. At the touch of an LCD screen, the car can "hunker down" to just 1.1 inches (27mm) off the ground for show display or rise to a drivable height of 5.5 inches. Transmission: Power is sent to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted 4-speed automatic transaxle featuring electronic push-button controls. Design & Craftsmanship: Exterior: The pillarless coupe body is made of fiberglass and finished in a deep, multi-layer custom "Soprano Purple" paint. It features hand-made billet aluminum brightwork, including a massive reinterpretation of the FJ's signature "toothy" grille. It rolls on custom billet wheels (20-inch front, 22-inch rear). Interior: The cabin blends "radiogram" nostalgia with modern tech. It features cream leather "tombstone" bucket seats, figured maple timber flooring with aluminum inserts, and a drop-down touch-control LCD screen that disappears into the body-colored metal dash. Entertainment: Despite its retro look, it houses a 3,000-watt professional-grade sound system with a 1,000-watt subwoofer. Legacy: In 2007, the Efijy was named the United States Concept Car of the Year in Dearborn, Michigan, beating out over 30 other concepts from global manufacturers. Although collectors have reportedly offered over $1.5 million for the vehicle, it remains a one-off icon in the Holden heritage collection.
