Knecht: Grand Organ Sonata - Pep Organ

This week, Pep Organ returns to the excellent music of Justin Heinrich Knecht, a composer whose seemingly simple melodies concealed a brilliantly fresh approach to organ writing: treating the organ like an orchestra. The Grosse Orgelsonate (Grand Organ Sonata) in C Major is a single-movement work, resembling a first movement of an orchestral symphony. It offers the organist many opportunities for different registrations. As usual Knecht does not indicate any pedal, so I use it sparingly in the orchestral role of the Double Basses, to accentuate the bassline at the 16’ register. The Sonata comes from Volume 2 of Knecht’s Vollständige Orgelschule (Complete Organ School). It is certainly one of the more demanding of his works, because of the dexterity required to execute all the different semiquaver figurations. Performed on the J.A.
