In my video, we continue to go down the road of British social history when taking a nostalgic journey back to the 1970s, exploring how working-class families cooked, ate, and lived through food. This was a time of home-cooked meals, tight budgets, and making the most of what you had. We look at the everyday foods many families relied on — meat and vegetable dinners, homemade pies, stews, and puddings, alongside the tins that filled so many cupboards, from pilchards to sponge puddings and meat puddings.sometimes less meat than veg. There were foods we loved and foods we endured — and also the treats: tinned sponge puddings, spotty dick, jars of sweets weighed in pounds and ounces, and party classics like prawn cocktail or cheese and pineapple on a stick, once the height of sophistication. This video also explores the social history of food — when fruit and vegetables were sold loose, wrapped in paper bags, with little plastic and far less waste. Before large supermarkets took over, corner shops were on every street, offering choice, familiarity, and community. We’ll reflect on how food shaped family life, how meals brought people together, and ask the question: Was the food of the 1970s actually better than what we eat today? If you remember these meals — or are curious about how Britain used to eat — this is a warm, honest look at a time when food was simple, filling, and shared. #britishhistory #history #uksocialhistory #backintime #nostalgia #howweusedtolive #1970s #1970sbritain #ukhistory #childhoodmemories #howwecookedinthe1970 #foodweateinthe1970s #homecookedfood #mickeybavington #livingonabudgetinthe1970s
