Federal lawmakers are digging into the massive fraud scandal unfolding in Minnesota, where dozens of Somali foreign nationals have been arrested and accused of diverting more than a billion dollars in taxpayer funds to terrorist organizations. The investigation is widening, with more charges expected, and a new review by Open The Books identifying additional federal social-service grants flowing directly into Minnesota’s Somali community. Rachel O’Brien, the deputy public policy editor at Open The Books, says there are three main schemes: Feeding Our Future, which claimed to feed children from low-income families; an autism program where parents allegedly claimed their children were autistic to obtain federal kickbacks; and a housing scheme that purported to find homes for elderly residents. She says when questions were raised about potential fraud in the program, state leaders were worried about allegations of racism. “One investigator said to the New York Times, the state’s leaders were afraid forcefully tackling this issue might cause political backlash,” said O’Brien. “They’re going to have to be held accountable.” For more on the claimed Somali fraud in Minnesota, watch the video player above or visit The National Desk’s YouTube channel for O’Brien’s full interview. _________________________________________ For the latest local and national news, visit our website: https://wchstv.com/ Sign up for our newsletter: https://wchstv.com/sign-up Follow WCHS-TV on social media: Facebook: / eyewitnessnewscharleston Twitter: / wchs8fox11 Instagram: / wchs8fox11
